Read Street's, Social Literacies, to end.

Read chapters 26 and 35 in Cushman, et al.'s Literacy: A Critical Sourcebook.

Write a reader response to some aspect of the readings that you found particularly interesting and why. About 1 page of writing per week is sufficient for the reader's log.

Log on to the literacy forum between Wednesday night and Sunday noon for this week's informal online discussion.

 

For Tuesday, Sept 6

Read Cushman, et al., Literacy , TOC, chapts 1 & 7

Read Street, Social Literacies (to p. 99)

Log into the course Blackboard site and click onto the "Content" menu option. Read the following files in preparation for our first class meeting:

Read Bowden's "Literacy" and Shepherd's "Literacy" (revised keyword)

Read Sampson's "The Earliest Writing"

Read Schmandt-Besserat's "Symbols in the Prehistoric Middle East"

Reader Response: Jot down your response to some aspect of the readings that you found particularly interesting (...exciting....infuriating...overwhelming...just plain cool) and why. Bring these to class for discussion.

Log into the course Blackboard site and click onto the "Content" menu option. Read the following files in preparation for our first class meeting:

Read Maugham's "The Verger"

Get the books you will need for this course.

Browse through Literacy a Critical Sourcebook . Identify chapters that you would be interested in discussing for the in-class colloquium. Pick your top 3 (chapts 1, 7, 26, & 35 are already preselected as readings).
